  4.     Q. De Klerk seems to put a great deal of stock in your
  5. leadership. To what extent are you concerned with his political
  6. survival?
  7.  
  8.     A. We are aware of the problems that he has, especially
  9. from the right wing and possibly from inside his own party as
  10. well. What we have done is to appeal to whites to assist De
  11. Klerk. We are also trying to address the problem of white
  12. opposition to him. Discussions have already been started with
  13. influential sectors in the right wing.

  16.     Q. What contacts has your organization had with the right
  17. wing?
  18.  
  19.     A. We don't want to go into those details now because these
  20. are very delicate negotiations.

  23.     Q. Can you say which organizations?
  24.  
  25.     A. We'd rather not. We are dealing with influential
  26. individuals in the right wing. I don't want to go beyond that,
  27. except to say that our intention is to mobilize the entire right
  28. wing to support Mr. De Klerk, to support the peace initiative.

  31.     Q. Any success?

  33.     A. From the meetings that we've had, it seems as if our
  34. message for a peaceful solution is very strong.

  37.     Q. What would be the danger if De Klerk were removed from
  38. the party leadership or ousted in the next election?
  39.  
  40.     A. I have no doubt that whatever difficulties he has, he
  41. will remain in power. The only danger he must try to avoid is
  42. going back to white voters for any mandate he might like to
  43. have. The right wing in my view is quite strong. I am saying to
  44. him that he should act jointly with us in trying to reach a
  45. negotiated settlement as speedily as possible. Once a nonracial
  46. constitution is introduced, then everybody will have the vote.
  47. He will be assured of the vote of the overwhelming majority of
  48. South Africans. But if he goes for a mandate for whites alone,
  49. he is in danger.

  52.     Q. Why have you not been able to end the fighting in Natal?
  53.  
  54.  
  55.     A. If it were a question of conflict between Mangosuthu
  56. Buthelezi's Inkatha [movement] and the A.N.C., we would have
  57. solved this matter long ago. But my problem is the government,
  58. because what is happening in Natal is no longer a clash between
  59. the A.N.C. and Inkatha. The government has taken advantage of
  60. the clash between the two organizations to crush the A.N.C. and
  61. eliminate its membership in Natal. I have asked De Klerk the
  62. simple question, Why has the government failed to suppress that
  63. violence for more than 4 1/2 years, and when almost 4,000 people
  64. have died? And De Klerk has never been able to give me a
  65. satisfactory answer.

  68.     Q. Wouldn't it help if you met with Buthelezi? It is an
  69. important question.

  71.     A. It is not important to us. There are six homeland
  72. leaders in South Africa. We are working with five. What is the
  73. importance of Buthelezi? I don't see it.
